Abstract

Poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) grafted sago starch was used as a new starting polymer to obtain the poly(hydroxamic acid) resin. The PMA grafted sago starch was prepared by a free radical initiating process. The ester group of the PMA grafted copolymer was converted to the hydroxamic acid using the hydroxylamine in an alkaline solution. The sorption behavior of the poly(hydroxamic acid) resin toward metal ions (Cu and Cr) was investigated in aqueous solution using a batch adsorption technique. The resin exhibits high affinity for the two metal ions (copper and chromium ions). The relative amount of metal ion taken up by the resin increases steadily with the increase of concentration of the sorption medium. The binding capacities of copper was maximum (0.0058 mmol g-l in 1 ppm), (0.0218 mmol g-l in 3 ppm) and (0.0294 mmol g-l) at pH 6. It was also found that, the sorption capacity of metal ions was pH dependent while its selectivity toward these metal ions is in the following order: Copper ion (Cu2+) > Chromium ion (Cr3+). The rate adsorption of copper was determined using the resin beads with copper solution for various time intervals and it was observed that the rate exchange of copper was very fast that is, t1/2 ≈5 min.
