Abstract

This study was conducted in the School of Sustainable Agriculture, Sandakan Campus, Universiti Malaysia Sabah to evaluate the effect of application of empty fruit bunch (EFB) ash, lime and inorganic NPK fertilizer on the growth and development of maize. There were seven treatments which included control, 0.5 t ha⁻¹ NPK, 0.5 t ha⁻¹ NPK with lime at 2.5 t ha⁻¹, 0.5 t ha⁻¹ NPK with EFB ash at 20 t ha⁻¹, 0.25 t ha⁻¹ NPK with EFB ash at 20 t ha⁻¹ , 0.5 t ha⁻¹ NPK with lime at 2.5 t ha⁻¹ plus EFB ash at 20 t ha⁻¹ and 0.25 t ha⁻¹ NPK with lime at 2.5 t ha⁻¹ plus EFB ash at 20 t ha⁻¹. Each treatment was replicated five times. The treatments were assigned using completely randomized design. The parameters were days to seed germination, days to first leaf emergence, days to taselling, plant height, total dry matter, root dry weight, leaf area, nutrient content of leaf and selected soil chemical properties. All data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test was used for mean separation. Result showed that at 55 days after planting, 0.25 t ha⁻¹ NPK fertilizer and 20 t ha⁻¹ EFB ash application increased the height of plant, total dry matter, root dry weight and leaf area by 49.49%, 196.69%, 147.09% and 69.39% compared to control treatment respectively. Nutrient content in leaf was enhanced by 0.5 t ha⁻¹ NPK and 20 t ha⁻¹ EFB ash, particularly P and K content with a percentage difference of 83.9% and 93.79% higher compared to control treatment. Soil pH increased for all treatments, while soil P content was highest for treatment involving only the incorporation of 0.5 t ha⁻¹ NPK into the soil. The combination of 5.0 t ha⁻¹ of NPK and 20 t ha⁻¹ EFB ash is the recommended treatment.
