Abstract

The relative age effect (RAE) is referred to as the differentials in age between children and youth who are born within an annual age group. Athletes born early in the year have a propensity to succeed in a competition because they get advantages in terms of physical and psychological abilities compared to the later- born within their age group. The current study aimed to examine the existence of relative age effect (RAE) among players who represented their team at the Netball Sabah Games competition; determine the presence of RAE in playing positions amongst netball players. A total of 91 players from 8 districts of Sabah who competed in the tournament participated in the current study. Birth data of players was obtained from the team managers of each team before the tournament begins. The births were distributed into the four relative age quartile categories (Q1 = January to March; Q2 = April to June; Q3 = July to Sept; Q4 = Oct to Dec). The result of the Chi-Square goodness of fit test showed the presence of RAE among the netball players [χ2 (3) = 14.54; p < 0.002] with the largest number of players were born in the 1st quartile. Besides, the results also revealed the existence of RAE in GK and WA playing positions (p < .05) with the highest number of players who were born in the 1st quartile. In conclusion, from the current findings, it shows that the relative age effect (RAE) has influenced the selection of Netball Sabah Games players.
