Abstract
Three medicinal plants, Allium sativum (garlic), Allium cepa (onion) and Piper nigrum (black pepper) were used by tradisional practitioners for the ailments of microbial origins. It was found that extracts contained the characteristic of alkaloids compound which may included alliin and piperine substances. Besides, the extracts fraction (petroleum ether, chloroform, n-butano and methanol aqueous) were tested for their antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis), gramnegative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and yeast species (Candida albicans) using disc diffusion and MIC method. Antibacterial activity was demonstrated especially against gram-positive bacteria. In addition, a concentrated of plants extracts can affect the size of the inhibition zone against test organisms. A. Sativum extracts was found able to inhibit S. aureus while extract A. cepa had the ability to inhibit B. subtilis. Meanwhile, P. nigrum extract able to inhibit E. coli. Concentrated crude extract (100 mg/mL) of A. Sativum and P. nigrum was found able to inhibit C. albicans spora in human's serum and decrease the germination and elongation of spora. Plant extract was found containing an active compound in antimicrobial activities which was an effective antimicrob drugs to microorganisms.
