Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the status of bathing water quality in Tanjung Aru Beach, Sabah. Ten sampling stations were selected and two replications were taken at each sampling station. The sampling was done three times in December 2009. Station A was the freshwater point source drainage and station B was the seawater sampling station. Five stations were selected for freshwater point source and seawater bathing area respectively along the coastal area. Temperature, turbidity, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), oil and grease (OG), total coliform (TC) and fecal coliform (FC) were the parameters selected for this study. The in-situ parameters namely temperature, turbidity, salinity, pH and DO were measured using portable Hach 2100P Turbidimeter and DO Meter and Hanna MultiMeter Hi9828. OG, TC and FC were analyzed in the laboratory. For OG analysis, partition gravimetric method was used. Membrane filtration technique was used to identify the amount of TC and FC. Data obtained were compared with the Interim National Water Quality Standards (INWQS) and Bathing Water Directive (76/160/EEC). The values for each parameter recorded in this study were: temperature (28.90°C-31.90°C), turbidity (3.52NTU-90.17NTU), salinity (0.53ppt-37.97ppt), pH (6.52-7.81), DO (4.50mg/l-7.13mg/l), OG (0.04mg/1-0. 34mg/l), TC (16.S0cfu/l00ml-52.33cfu/100ml) and FC (6.67cfu/l00ml- 30.50cfu/100ml). Results showed that all the physicochemical parameters complied with the INWQS. OG, TC and FC also complied with the limit stated by Bathing Water Directive (76/160/EEC). One-way ANOVA analysis and Tukey test showed that the parameter of temperature, turbidity, salinity, pH, DO and FC had significant differences (p < 0.05) among the sampling stations. The correlation test showed the relationship between: OG with TC (r=0.836), FC (r=0.672) and salinity (r=-0.666); TC with OG (r=0.836), FC (r=0.889), temperature (r=-0.657), salinity (r=-0.847), pH (r=-0.844) and DO (r=-0.812); FC with OG (r=0.672), TC (r=0.889), temperature (r=-0.692), salinity (r=-0.831), pH (r=-0.813) and DO (r=-0.819). Based on the two water quality standards, Tanjung Aru Beach, Sabah was suitable for recreational purpose and use with body contact.
