Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of nitrifying and probiotic bacteria on the survival and growth of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus that was reared in high density as well as the quality of rearing water. The experiment was divided into two sets, Set A (control and nitrifying bacteria) and Set B (nitrifying bacteria and nitrifying + probiotic bacteria) and were conducted in two densities namely 10 tails/L and 15 tails/L. Juvenile African catfish with weight of 109.1 ± 8.0080 mg and 103.8 ± 1.6650 mg were used in Set A and Set B respectively. The results in Set A showed better survival and growth in nitrifying bacteria treatment for both of the densities. On the final days of experiment, the survival rate was recorded higher than control groups; 72.40% and 31.56% for 10 tails/L and 15 tails/L densities respectively. The nitrifying bacteria have also lowered down the level of ammonia and nitrite through nitrification process. Ammonia concentration was 0.2769 mg/L and 0.5205 mg/L for 10 t tails/L and 15 tails/L densities respectively. Whereas nitrite concentration was recorded 0.2278 mg/L for 10 tails/L and 0.1244 mg/L for 15 tails/L While in Set B, the survival rate was higher in nitrifying + probiotic bacteria treatment compared to nitrifying bacteria treatment; 90% and 45.30% in 10 tails/L and 15 tails/L densities respectively. The present of probiotic bacteria has reduced the concentration of ammonia and nitrite better than the nitrifying bacteria groups. Ammonia concentration was recorder 0.02 mg/L and 0.04 mg/L for 10 tails/L and 15 tails/L While nitrite concentration was recorder 0.09 mg/L and 0.11 mg/L for 10 tails/L and 15 tails/L respectively. This study has prove that nitrifying and probiotic bacteria can be used in culturing fish in high density which have brought many benefits to cultured fish in terms of survival rate, growth and water quality of rearing fish. Thus, aquaculture industry is recommended to use the mixture of nitrifying and probiotic bacteria to achieve better results.
