Abstract

Baseline study was done on the chemical properties of soft corals in Mantanani Island. There are a total of 9 samples of soft corals, which cover genera Lobophytum, Sinularia, Sarcophyton, Nephthea, and Dendronephthya, were used to analyze for their chemical properties, antibacterial and fatty acids composition. Among all the tested soft corals, Sinuaria sp.2 yield the most crude extracts, which is 1.6369%of its fresh specimen weight; whereas both species from Sarcophyton showed the most richness of natural products and high percentage of fatty acids (0.38% and 0.39%). For antibacterial bioassay, Nepththea sp. shows the most bioactive response against environmental bacterial, whereas the members from Lobophytum and Sinularia are potentially to be extracted for medicine purpose. In natural, soft corals from Nephthea, Sarcophyton and Sinularia are potentially the hawksbill preferences feeds due to their high fatty acids content and their bioactive response. From the soft corals crude extracts, there is a known compound successfully been isolated, which is 4(α-methyl-3ß, 8ß -dihydroxy-5α-ergost-24(28)-en-23-one.
