Abstract
The leaves extract fractions of Macaranga tanarius (M tanarius) namely hexane (HEX), dichloromethane (DCM), n-buthanol (BUT), and aqueous (AQ) extracts were analysed for its total phenolic contents, antioxidative, antikinases and antimicrobial activities. The total phenolic contents were determined based on Folin-Ciocalteu method and the results showed that BUT fraction had the highest phenolic contents among all other fractions (796 GAB in mg/g). The antioxidative activities of the extracts were then measured using the DPPH method. The results showed that BUT fraction had the highest anti oxidative activities among the accessions tested. There was a strong association between total phenolic contents and antioxidative activities (R² = 0.959), suggesting that phenolic compounds were probably responsible for the antioxdative activity of the M tanarius. The study also revealed that M tanarius exhibited only a moderate inhibition in MAPK KinaseP386 screening system and negative activity against MSGS, GSK-3β, Ras/Raf-l and PPI screening system. In antimicrobial test using disc diffusion method, BUT fraction was again the most active sample against 4 types of bacteria. Therefore as a conclusion, phenolic compounds in the BUT fraction were the major contributors to the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of M. tanarius.
