Abstract

This study was conducted to compare the water quality and growth performance of Litopenaeus vannamei postlarvae rearing in different filter media with or without nitrifying bacteria. Filter materials that used in this study were Crystal Bio, coral rubble and sand. There were two experiments conducted. In experiment I, there are four treatment groups, which are Crystal Bio with or without nitrifying bacteria (CBN and CB, respectively) coral with or without nitrifying bacteria (CRN and CR, respectively). During this experiment, the water quality (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate concentration) in the filter tank were analysed at three days intervals, the body weight gain was taken 10 days interval and survival rate was calculated on the final day of experiment. In experiment II, there are eight treatment groups including those used in experiment I, and 4 new treatment groups which were sand with or without nitrifying bacteria (SN and 5, respectively), without any filter material but with or without nitrifying bacteria (CN and C, respectively),. The same parameters were examined as same in experiment I. In experiment I, growth and survival of shrimp did not show significant different (p>0.05) among treatment groups. In term of water quality, ammonia and nitrite concentration was lowest in CRN. However, there was no significant different with CBN. In experiment II, growth and survival of those treatment groups with nitrifying bacteria showed higher body weight gain and survival rate compared to groups without nitrifying bacteria. Ammonia and nitrite concentration was lowest in CBN at the. final day of experiment. In term of growth and survivals of shrimp and efficiency to maintain water quality CBN and CRN gave a similar performance. However, CRN is more economic compare to CBN.
