Abstract

Aromatherapy lip balms were developed using essential oils extracted from local medicinal plants and local materials as main Ingredients. The main purpose of lip balm is to protect and moisturize lip. The innovation of this study was to formulate a cosmeceutical aromatherapy lip balm without addition of synthetic coloring and fragrance. In this study, different texture (soft and hard) aromatherapy lip balms were developed using beeswax, various vegetable oils and essential oils. Raw beeswax was purified with solvent free technique steamed under 80ºC for 5 hours. The average percentage yield of the raw beeswax was 51.5%. In additional, the purified beeswax obtained was high In quality with appearance of cream yellowish coloured, and honey-like aroma. The aromatherapy lip balms produced showed no inhibition against Bacellius subtillis and Staphylococcus aureus 5277 in disc diffusion antimicrobial assay. The toxicities of the balms were evaluated using a Brine Shrimp (Artemia salina) assay and the results showed that all the balms produced were highly non-toxic. Lastly, the aromatherapy lip balms were tested for color, appearance, and odor stability against temperature within a period of three month and were found to stable during the testing period. In conclusion, various strong aroma, low toxicity and strong stability aromatherapy lip balm were produced. Beeswax is deemed to be a suitable source of natural product in balm Industry.
