Abstract

Study of mangrove cover changes in South of Kota Belud district between 2001 and 2005 year was done by using Remote Sensing as a tool. The objectives of the study were to identify the change of mangrove cover between 2001 and 2005 year in Southern Part of Kota Belud District, Sabah; to obtain the dependency level of coastal villagers on mangrove products and mangrove conservation; and to identify human impact on the mangrove area. The evaluation of spatiotemporal change in mangrove area between the two study years was using Landsat TM imagery. The analysis of Landsat image for the two study years was done using Erdas Imagine 9.1 version software shows little changes of mangrove cover in the study area. The results of mangrove changes in the study area were supported by field observation in assessing the accuracy of the unsupervised classifications. Changes of mangrove cover in the imagery data and in the relations of mangrove dependency of the livelihoods in the study area were discussed. The results of interviews with 43 inhabitants of four fishing villages visited indicated that, overall, mangrove and its products were highly important to them and therefore they are willing to participate in the conservation activities. The interviews results and datas of number of fishermen by gear groups and number of marine fish landings in 1992 to 2004 were used to support the imagery data analysis. Anthropogenic impacts seen on the area were activities such cutting, fish farm constructions, agriculture activity and conversions of mangrove to human populations. This paper discussed about changes of mangrove in the imagery data and in relations of mangrove dependency of the livelihoods in the study area, plus to the use of remote sensing as a tool.
