Abstract
Microalgae are well known for its nutritional value and the ability to produce valuable chemical compounds. High cell densities of microalgae cultivated are therefore desired but the low growth rate is a factor that causes the effort of testing fertilizer to be carried out. Two kinds of concentrations of ASL kelp fertilizer which were 0.001 % and 0.004% were chosen and tested on the culture of marine microalgae, Chaetoceros calcitran. This species was chosen as it has the longest life cycle among the other five species and better treatment effects can be observed. The results of growth rate of treatment fertilizer systems were compared with the control fertilizer system. As the data was not normally distributed, non parametric test was used instead of parametric test. The differences among these three fertilizer systems were not significant enough as the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test suggested. Based on the similar TLC results, further chemical investigation was not done. Beside the treatment fertilizer effects, other factors such as light intensity of cultured solution which inside glass bottles from each fertilizer systems was measured and compared. Further study of fertilizer based culture of marine microalgae should consider of the adjustment of percentage of treatment fertilizers that used which affecting light intensity of culture.
