Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effect of particle size and pH on copper solubility in river sediments. The sediment samples were collected from Bambangan River, Mentaki River and Upper Liwagu River in Ranau. The sediments were divided into two fractions according to the particle size, namely PI (1-2 mm) and P2 «180 µm). Each fraction was extracted using aqueous solution with pH ranging from 2.0 to 7.0. The concentrations of copper in the extracts were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The results showed that the Cu concentration in the sediments ranged from 11.20 to 301.9 µ/g. The highest Cu concentration was obtained for the AMD-impacted river, namely Bambangan River. Comparatively, Cu concentration is higher in the <180 µm (P2) than the 1-2 nun (PI) particle size fraction. The solubility of Cu was highest in Bambangan River. However, for each sediment sample, Cu solubility increased with decrease in particle size and pH. The solubility of copper in the sediments were lower compared to the solubilities of copper minerals namely, CuO, Cu(OH)² and CuCO₃.
