Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effect of different foliar treatment on the fruit yield and postharvest quality of Kulai chilli that was planted using fertigation system. For the postharvest quality, the fruits sample was observed for twelve days on three storage condition which is open air, room temperature and cold room. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of using these different foliar treatment on harvest and postharvest quality of Kulai chilli fruits. There were four types of foliar treatments used in this study which included Calcium, Boron, mixture of calcium and boron which were applied at 0.5 % concentration and water as a control. Results show that the foliar treatment affected the quality of the Kulai chilli fruits. calcium and boron mixture resulted in the highest harvest quality for fruit circumference, fruit fresh weight, fruit length and fruit volume with respective values 5.01 cm, 9.47 g, 13.30 cm and 19.32 cm³. The calcium and boron mixture also resulted in the highest vitamin C content with a value of 32 mg/100 ml. This show that calcium and boron mixture resulted in a better effect compare to calcium, boron and control. The highest harvest quality for titratable acidity are shown by boron with 5.16%. For postharvest quality, there was significant interaction (p<0.05) between the three factors which is storage period, storage condition and foliar treatments for weight loss, decay, vitamin C, titratable acidity and pH. The results show that calcium and boron mixture under cold room condition gives the best quality for the storage period between 4 days, 8 days and 12 days. Significant interactions resulted between treatments and storage condition as well as treatments and storage period on the postharvest quality study. Overall, calcium and boron mixture foliar treatment resulted in better effect on harvest and postharvest quality of Kulai chilli fruits.
