Abstract

Synthesis and characterization of bent-shaped liquid crystal with azobenzene is presented in this study. The bent-shaped liquid crystal was obtained from biphenyl as the central core which was derived from resorcinol. There were four major steps in synthesizing this bent-shaped compound. First was the diazonium coupling reaction which was then followed by Williamson ether synthesis reaction. This reaction was continued with the hydrolysis reaction and finally esterification took place. In this step, the carboxylic compound reacted with resorcinol to form an ester. This reaction was catalyzed by DCC and DMAP. The final compound obtained was 1,3'-Biphenyl[4-(4- decanloxyphenylazo)benzoate] which was orange in color. The percentage of yield of the compound was 13.76 % and the melting point was 186.25⁰C. The molecular structures of the compounds were identified using FT-IR spectroscopy and ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The final compound contained an ester functional group which was proven by the FT-IR spectroscopy. This compound showed an absorption band at 1733.18 cm⁻¹ which corresponds to the ester functional group. Besides that, ¹H NMR spectroscopy was used to ascertain the molecular structure of the final compound. There was no mesophase detected based on the DSC analysis. Therefore, the final compound was a crystalline solid.
