Abstract

The synthesis of chloro -substituted liquid crystal containing azobenzene moieties was carried out by coupling reaction and Williamson ether synthesis. The (4-(3-chloro-4- acetylphenylazo)phenoxy) alkane were orange in colour which indicated the presence of azo group. For characterization techniques of synthesized liquid crystal, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to investigate the mesomorphic properties and its is found that the (4-(3-chloro-4acetylphenylazo)phenoxy) hexane and (4-(3-chloro-4- acetylphenylazo)phenoxy) decane to have mesophase. The structural investigation was done by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) in KBr pellets and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with CDCl₃ as a solvent. Results show that the synthesized liquid crystals have the functional group and the structure as expected
