Abstract

This research aim to determine pollution from a source least noticed the drainage system by determining BOD and pH of samples taken from there. Analysis method used is in accordance to APHA (1987) as prescribed in EQA 1974. Results from laboratory analysis shows that most of the drains does not pose a high risk in polluting the marine environment as it is found that the lowest average BOD5 value of 4.05 mg/L O₂ and pH range of 7.15 to 7.91 and that they comply even to the Standard A of EQA (Industrial Discharge and Effluent) 1979. However the fresh market is found to be very polluting with average BOD₅ value of 46.58 mg/L O₂₋. This result violates the Standard A of EQA (Industrial Discharge and Effluent) 1979 but however it complies to Standard B of the same legislation which are used on this waters as it does not flows to drinking water supply sources in which Standard A are used. It is suggested that the relevant authorities could set up monitoring at polluting drains such as the fresh market and take steps in reducing pollution loading in to the marine environment. More studies are also needed to understand the dynamics of the drainage system in order to curb pollution to the marine environment.
