Abstract

This research is being done to study the effect of using a planting medium based on mesocarp fibre mixed with top soil to the growth and production of green spinach. The objective of this research is to study the effectiveness of mesocarp fibre as a good medium for the green spinach growth and to increase the production and quality with the usage of mesocarp fibre as a planting medium. This research was held under the rain shelter at the Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture Farm, University Malaysia Sabah. This research was held for 4 weeks using Completely Randomize Design (CRD) as the experimental design. Green spinach had been planted in a polybag and 5 treatments are used for this research which are Tl (top soil-control), T2 (20% Mesocarp Fibre + 80% top soil), T3 (40% Mesocarp Fibre + 60% top soil), T4 (60% Mesocarp Fibre + 40% top soil), TS (80% Mesocarp Fibre + 20% top soil). The parameters that are recorded in this research are trunk diameter, number of leaves, plant height, wet and dry weight and soil pH before and after planting. Based on analysis done, there is highly significant difference between treatments for growth and yield of green spinach where Tl had shown the best growth and yield. Therefore, it is not recommended to use mesocarp fibre to increase growth and yield of green spinach.
