Abstract

Generally, an intermarriage occurs due to the emotional factors that exist between a couple which are also influenced by various other motivating factors such as population demographics, interaction, government policy, culture, religion and tolerance. Today, intermarriage is often used as one of the indicators – either good or otherwise - of the relationship between groups in a society or a country. High tolerance in a society can be seen when intermarriage becomes a common practice in society. Therefore, this study aims to explain the practice of intermarriage in the community in Kota Kinabalu with Bumiputera as respondents of the study. The results of the study using a questionnaire method involving a total of 731 respondents found that the practice of intermarriage in the respondents' families is high. The practice of intermarriage in the respondents’ families is not only across ethnicity but also across religion and citizenships. This shows that the relationship among the multi-ethnic community in Kota Kinabalu is good.
