Abstract

This paper is intended to investigate the best coating material in an attempt to apply sprayed coatings on a cam and follower. A series of unidirectional pin-on-disc testing with non-additive lubricant were conducted by adopting similar condition in cam and follower in terms of sliding speed and contact stress. Sprayed molybdenum disc and alumina-titania disc were tested against steel pin and ceramic pin. About 9 combinations comprising of high load and low load have been tested. And the best material combination is selected in terms of friction and wear of such coatings in high-contact pressure application. It was found that silicon nitride and alumina-titania with 0.127 mm (0.005") nickel bonded coating was the best mating material due to its low coefficient of friction and low wear. The details of studies are presented in this paper
