Abstract

PURPOSE: This study aims to analyze the research trends and development in the field of literati painting and scholar painting in the past 22 years, to draw various knowledge maps such as keyword co-occurrences, issuing institutions, author cooperation, and emergent words, and to present the overall research trends and hot spots in the field of literati painting and scholar painting; at the same time, to combine literature reading and reflection on problems, with the aim of shedding light on art education and art theory research in colleges and universities. METHODOLOGY: The literature database of China Knowledge Network (CNKI) was used as the platform to systematically analyze and compare the literature related to literati painting and scholar painting research during 2000-2022 with the help of CiteSpace literature visualization analysis tool, and to map the knowledge co-occurrence network relationship between literati painting and scholar painting research. RESULTS: Important institutions for the study of literati painting and scholar painting lie in universities. Some scholars have already started to pay attention to the fact that scholar painting and literati painting are two different kinds of paintings and try to analyze and identify the differences between them, which will be a hot spot for scholar painting research in the future. However, the research is still insufficient, and there is still a need to sort out scholar’s painting in terms of its origin, period, style, characteristics, and the personality of the painter, so as to reveal it from the obscurity of literati painting. IMPLICATIONS: This dissertation provides a comprehensive comparison and analysis of the research status and research hotspots of literati painting and scholar painting, and analyzes their development trends, broadening the perspective and ideas for art education in colleges and universities. At the same time, it is also important to provide a scientific reference for art history and art theory research. As the way of Chinese art education changed after the twentieth century, the creation of Chinese ink painting faced a transformation, and art education in colleges and universities about the creation of ink painting became more and more critical. This thesis provides a reference for future research on literati painting and scholar painting, which is conducive to the development of relevant theories and stylistic techniques, and to the mutual invention and dialogue between literati painting and scholar painting, enriching and expanding contemporary Chinese painting creation.
