Abstract

Sponges, Amphimedon sp., Aaptos sp., Xestospongia sp., Haliclona sp., and Callyspongia sp. were collected from Pulau Sulug, Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, Sabah. Amphimedon sp. and Aaptos sp. were observed with bite mark, believed to be cause by hawksbill turtles. The sponge samples were analyzed for ash, moisture, protein, lipid, fatty acid content. Microscopic observation was done on these sponge samples. There were no significant difference (p>0.05) between Amphimedon sp. and Aaptos sp. as compared to the other three species of sponges for moisture, and lipid content. The protein concentrations of these two species were relatively higher than other three species of sponges collected from the same place, which were 0.1306mg/g and 0.1656mg/g, respectively. The percentage of ash content in Amphimedon sp. and Aaptos sp. was relatively low, 66.84% and 51.43%, respectively. The ash content of all sponges was of total mineral, and was mostly composed of spicules in the sponges. Hence, from microscopic observation using compound microscope, spicules found in Amphimedon sp. and Aaptos sp. were relatively lower than the other three species of sponges. Through observation of sponge tissues under stereo microscope, the tissue content of the sponges that were found with bite marks consisted of compact soft tissues.
