Abstract

The characteristics of the neutralization of acidic solutions by calcareous sandstone (CSS) in the absence and presence of dissolved metals (Fet, Al, Mn) were investigated and compared. The acidic solutions used were acidic aqueous solution and AMD samples. For each experiment, pH changes with contact time were recorded. The results showed that the final pH attained increases with contact time and solid-solution ratio. The increase in pH, however, became low and slow with the presence of dissolved metal ions in solution. The effect of dissolved metals followed the sequence: Al(III» Fe(III»> Fe(II» Mn(II). This became significant at high concentration of dissolved metals, and in the presence of mixed dissolved metal ions as in AMD.
