Abstract
Declaration of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to protect a marine area from unsustainable utilisation is a way of conservation that is widely adopted for management of marine natural resources. It was the main interest in this project to study the health of the coral reefs at Lankayan Island and to assess the economic benefits from conservation efforts being carried out at the island Reef Check monitoring protocol was adopted to assess the status of the reefs at the island and questionnaire survey method was adopted to study the economic benefits from tourism. The results of this study shows that the coral reefs at the island is in an overall good condition with absence of overfishing. sedimentation and eutbrophication. The economic analysis shows that conservation of coral reefs is economically viable and beneficial towards the management as well as contributing towards the well-being of coral reefs at the island.
