Abstract
Radiation doses to the chest of patients were monitored during chest Radiography at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) using Dose Area Product (DAP) method. The objective of this study is to determine the Entrance Surface Dose (ESD) to the chest of patients during the examination and to compare the results with the recommended dose limit of 1.0 mGy for members of the public. In this study, measurements of DAP and ESD were carried out in a sample of 100 patients. DAP was determined using a transmission of ionizing chamber. Estimating the ESD values involve the Backscatter Factor (SSF) and ratio of the mean absorption coefficient of muscle and air, f determined for specific chest x-ray. Histogram and box plots are presented to get mean, median, first and third quartile, maximum and minimum values of ESD. The study outcome is compared to the previous which is reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB). The mean ESD was found to be 0.14 ±0.06 mGy during the examination. These doses are well within acceptable limits and comply well with those reported from IAEA and AELB.
