Abstract
A library still plays a significant role as one of the most vital warehouse for the written word despite the advancement of information technologies such as the internet. A typical library often consists of massive collection of books. The current search system available poses the problem of tracking and localizing books effectively. This thesis describes the work of a radio frequency identification (RFID) based localization system named RFID based library search system in an attempt to provide an effective way to localize books in a typical library. The development of the localization system involves several stages ranging from scope of work and methodology establishment, system development, testing and analyzing the end results. The scope of works are to define and design a laboratory scale system structure for the localization system development, to investigate the relationship between RFID reader output power level and detected RFID transponder tagged test sample distance on the laboratory scale system structure, to develop a localization system and lastly to conduct test and analysis on the developed localization system. Experiment on the relationship between RFID reader output power level and detected RFID transponder tagged test sample distance found that the characteristic of the relationship is generally the farther the distance of the test sample positioned away from the antenna, the more the RFID reader needs to increase its output power level. The test conducted on the localization system shows that 12mW increment step size produced the best accuracy as this increment step size yielded the lowest error estimation percentage which is 12.50%. This work has contributed in the research of localization in library by exploring on the ideas of using commonly available RFID products to build a localization system.
