Abstract

This study was carried out to obtain the concentrations of ammonia, nitrate and nitrite in the surface water of Likas Lagoon. The nutrient concentrations were compared with the DOE Interim Water Quality Standards for Malaysia (Class 11B). The nutrient levels at various locations of the lagoon were found to differ. The concentrations of each nutrient were determined using a Direct Reading Spectrophotometer Model DR 2000. The ammonia-levels were found to be in the range of 0.51 - 0.84 mgL-l, nitrate levels were 1.63 - 2.23 mgL-1 and the nitrite levels were 0.33 - 0.65 mgL-l. The main drain was found not to be the main source of the nutrients into the lagoon. The nitrate concentration was found to be below the national standard while the ammonia and nitrite concentrations were above the standard. Future development at the area should only be considered after a major clean up.
