Abstract
Phytochemical and biological studies were carried out on 31 plant samples collected from Klias Forest Reserves, Sabah. The scientific names of all the plants were identified with the help of botanists. The plants were extracted using methanol by refluxing. The extracts were analysed for its polyphenol and flavonoid contents using Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric method and Aluminium chloride colorimetric method respectively. Many of the plants had high polyphenol content in which of the leave of Archidendron sp exerted the highest total phenolic content in plant sample which was (153.78 GAE in mg/g). The leave of Timonium flavescens contained the highest flavonoids content in plant sample (28.81 mg QE/g). Eleven of the plants were moderately active against not more than five bacterium which were Streptococcus thyphimurium (S 1000), Escherichia coli (E 9 1/026), Bacillus cereus (B 43/04 B), Staphylococcus aureus (S 277) and Enterobacter aerogenes (ATCC/3048) used in the antimicrobial test and only the flower of Antiesma sp. showed medium inhibition against all the five bacterium as evaluated using a disc diffusion method. DPPH or (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrilhydrazyl) test showed that 25 of the plants demonstrated high antioxidative capability ranged from 70.59% to 97.31% compared to BHT, a synthetic antioxidant ranged from 37.85% to 63.44%. Toxicity test against brine shrimps lethality showed that 12 plants were with toxicity and 19 of the plants were highly toxic compared to potassium dichromate. In conclusion, many plants could be further studied as they had positive correlations in terms of antimicrobial activity, antioxidative activity and also polyphenol content. This shows that the plants exerted medicinal values and can be further investigated.
