Abstract
Boesenbergia species is a perennial herb belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. In this research, there are two objectives which were to determine essential oils of Boesenbergia species by hydrodistillation technique. Following objective is to study the effect of essential oil of leaves and roots of Boesenbergia species against antibacterial activity of the essential oil. In this research, two types of Boesenbergia species (Boesenbergia pulchella and Boesenbergia sp. 1) were collected from Monggis substation, Mount Tambuyokon, Ranau. Leaves and roots of both Boesenbergia species were extracted to obtain essential oil by using hydrodistillation method. Their antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were tested by a disc diffusion assay. The essential oils of both Boesenbergia species showed efficiency against gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) with inhibition zone of 10 mm against Staphylococcus aureus and showed no inhibition against negative-bacteria (E scherichiac oli).
