Abstract
In this study, iron oxide coated sand (IOCS) was prepared and its Cr(VI) adsorption characteristics and capacity were investigated. The final Cr(VI) concentration in solution was determined using Atomic Adsorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results of the batch experiments showed that Cr(VI) adsorption by IOCS was rapid during the first 10 minutes but equilibrium was only attained after 60 minutes. The adsorptionc onformst o pseudo-second order (R2= 0.9997) and intra-particle diffusion (R² = 0.9303) kinetic models. The equilibrium also fitted well to Freundlich (R² = 0.9328) and Langmuir (R² = 0.9989) isotherms. The maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity, qmax of IOCS is 0.36 mg g¹ which is higher compared to plain sand (0.18 mg g71) but lower compared to iron oxide (1.67 mg g¹).
