Abstract

This study is about the wild groupers in reef fish trade, Sabah. The study was aimed at understanding the live reef fish trade, specifically for groupers. The objectives of the study includes identifying the main species of groupers targeted in the reef fish trade, analyzing grouper landing trends for the last 10 years (1995 to 2004), finding out the price of groupers sold in seafood restaurants in Kota Kinabalu, and also identifying the level of public awareness as stakeholders regarding reef fish conservation. Interviews were done in six seafood restaurants in Kota Kinabalu to find out the retail price and wholesale price of the grouper, and also their opinions on conservation. Additionally, groupers samples from Mandidarah Island were also identified. The species of grouper samples from Mandidarah Island were different from the grouper species observed in seafood restaurants. Results of interview with seafood restaurant operators in Kota Kinabalu indicated three major "sources" of the groupers (and other reef-fishes) which is Kota Kinabalu, Kudat and Semporna. Analyses of the grouper landing in these three locations showed that the landings gradually decreased from 1995 to 2004. This is an indication of over exploitation from fisheries as the number of fishing gears remained the increased in the same period. Nevertheless, although grouper landings decreased, there is less effect on the retail price compared to wholesale price. Wholesale price will be affected based on the physical appearance such as injuries on the body of the fish. The interview results showed that most of the restaurant owners or their representatives are not aware of any conservation efforts or the destructive methods used to catch the live fish. This shows that there should be a stronger effort in ensuring law enforcement to reduce illegal and destructive fishing. There should also be increased efforts in raising awareness in conservation of the marine fish resources and environment in general.
