Abstract
Excessive use of pesticides not only affects the environment as a whole but also affects the soil microbial diversity. This study is carried out to determine the effect of herbicides on soil microbial diversity based on Biolog GN2 (Gram Negative 2) substrate utilization or community level physiological profiles. Data for statistical analyses (Analysis of Variance, Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis) are consisted of two herbicides (Hextar Paraquat 13 and Powex), of two concentrations (recommended concentration and tenfold concentration), of three sampling times (after 5 hours, 1 week and 2 weeks). Results indicated that herbicides affect soil microbial diversity_ Different concentrations have different effects and different herbicides have different · effects. The effects also varied across sampling times. It was found that tenfold concentration has greater effect than recommended concentration and Hextar Paraquat 13 has greater effect than Powex. Results also showed that there are changes in substrate utilization patterns caused by changes in soil microbial richness and evenness followed herbicides application.
