Salut-Mengabong lagoon is located at the west coast of Sabah facing the South China Sea. Substantial erosion of nearby coastal cliff and associated longshore sediment transport toward the inlets of this lagoon received considerable attention for the stability of the inlet and nearby infrastructures. This paper covers a primary study of water current and suspended sediment flux across the inlet; wave energy, longshore transport and associated morphodynamics changes of adjacent shorelines. The objectives are achieved through field measurement and simple model computations. Field measurements of current velocity, suspended sediment concentration and sediment flux across the inlet during typical spring tidal cycles were conducted in southwest monsoon and northeast monsoon. Beach profile measurements were conducted along five transacts. Wave hindcasting was conducted through parametric model calculation using measured wind data for the period from 1990 to 2004. The inlet is ebb-dominated leading to higher ebb tidal sediment fluxes and associated ebb shoals at the ocean side of the inlet. Water current and sediment flux during the northeast monsoon measurements was higher compared to those during the southwest monsoon measurements. Modeled wave energy shows that dominent wave enrgy along adjacent shorelines is from southwest direction. Karambunai beach is subjected to substantial dune erosion. Dalit beach is more or less depositional due to sediment bypassing from the updrift Karambunai beach. Calculated net longshore sand transport from the Karambunai coastline toward inlet is found to be about 31824 m3/y with associated cliff retreat of 3 m/y along the Karambunai coastline.
