Abstract

A comparative study on the anuran diversity was done between two study sites, Sungai Mesilau (Inside Mesilau Nature Park) and Sungai Mesilau 2 (Outside Mesilau Nature Park). Sungai Mesilau was classified as undistributed area while Sungai Mesilau 2, in contrast, was described as a disturbed area which was regularly exposed to agricultural runoffs from nearby Kampung Mesilau. A total of five samplings had been done from August until December 2007 with the interval of approximately four weeks between each visit. Two lines transects of 250 meters were established along the river for both sites and samplings were done at both sites during each visit. Visual examination on anurans was performed randomly on all possible microhabitats such as on leaf plants of low vegetations, on river bank, and under rocks and logs. All anurans were caught by usinghand-grabbing technique and brought back to be identified and preserved later in the laboratory. A total of 61 anurans individuals from 15 species were obtained from both study sites, with 25 individuals from nine species in Sungai Mesilau and 36 individuals from eight species in Sungai Mesilau 2. There were two overlapping species from both sites, namely Ansonia fuliginea and Meristogenys whiteheadi. Philautus were the anurans found dominating Sungai Mesilau while Meristogenys were found dominating Sungai Mesilau 2. The anuran abundance fluctuated from month to month and Sungai Mesilau 2 had a higher anuran abundance compared to Sungai Mesilau. Besides, Simpson diversity index also showed that Sungai Mesilau 2 had a higher diversity index, 0.8571, compared to Sungai Mesilau (0.790 1). Majority of the anurans sampled were found occurring in the same microhabitats for both sites. Tadpoles were collected in an attempt to rear but unfortunately, failed and most of the tadpoles occupying Sungai Mesilau were Ansonia guibei and Leptobrachium sp
