Abstract

This study is to determine the effects of different levels of probiotic towards the growth and survival of the PL in water recirculating system. Probiotic treatment on Whiteleg shrimp (Utopenaeus vannamei) was carried out in 10-L aquarium and 120 tails of PL shrimp were placed equally into 4 aquariums. In this study, treatment A is the control without any probioitic, B represents 5000 cfu/ml probiotic, C is 50,000 cfu/ml and D represents 500,000 cfu/ml. A number of 30 tails of PL were placed into 4 different treatment groups. Different levels of probiotic were added into each tank accordingly. Water ammonia concentration was examined by using spectrophotometer. The body weight gain and survival rate was calculated using formulas. This study showed that the survival rate and body weight gain of PL did not show any significant different between treatment groups. Treatment C showed the better performance in growth and survival of PL which 'was 0.17±0.36 and the survival rate was 70%. After challenge the probiotic treated PL with pathogen Vibrio sp. and pesticide, by immersion into rearing tank for 14 days, the survival rate was 93% and 96% respectively for the treatment C shrimp. In order to increase the body weight gain and survival rate, treatment C which is 50,000 cfu/ml gave the highest result compared to the other treatments. The shrimp with probiotic treatment shows active condition compared with control.
