Abstract

Essential oil is a mixture of volatile compounds such as ester, terpene, aldehyde, or ketone with unique odor. Encapsulation is widely used in aromatherapy for stabilization and control release of essential oil. Other benefits of encapsulation include ease of handling, Improved safety and Increased applicability to various products. In this study, three natural essential oils were successfully encapsulated using carrageenan and chitosan In beads forms. The essential oils of Baeckea frutescens, Cymbopogon nardus and Melaleuca alternifolia were extracted using hydrodistillation method; the yield was 1.64 %, 1.25 % and 2.55% respectively. These essential oils were then analyzed usIng GC-MS. Three major compounds found in B. frutescens were β-pinene (45.17 %), a-pinene (29.48 %), and Eucalptol (9.52 %). Citronellal (38.11 %), Citronellol (13.85 %) and a-cadinol (6.88 %) were the most abundant compound found in C narc/us. Three compounds with highest peak area found in M. alternifolia were 4-Terpineol (40.22 %), a-terpene (18.69 %), and followed by 3-methytene-1,5,5-trimethylcydohexene (9.03 %). Microscopic analysis showed that the essential oils were encapsulated In thin film. The release profiles of the encapsulated essential oils were analyzed using both thermal gravimetric analyzer and infrared moisture balance detector, Indicated different release characteristics amongst the encapsulated essential oils and non-encapsulated essential oil, the non-encapsulated evaporated the fastest. Infrared analysis demonstrated that there was no chemical change, suggesting physical Interactions among the essential oils, carrageenan and chitosan without altering the chemical structures. The stability of the beads against temperature and storing period was also proven. In conclusion, both carrageenan and chitosan were able to control the release rate of the essential oils without chemical alteration.
