Abstract
The effect of contact time and initial concentration on phosphate adsorption from aqueous solution by surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ) and surfactant modified volcanic tuff (SMVT) were investigated according to batch method. The same experiments were carried out on natural zeolite (NZ) and volcanic tuff (VT) for comparison. The residual concentration of phosphate in solution was determined according to acid ascorbic method. The results showed that the adsorption of phosphate by SMZ and SMVT was rapid during the first 5 minutes and slowed down until equilibrium was attained after 60 minutes. The adsorption conformed (R2 >0.98), to pseudo-second order kinetic model. The amount of phosphate adsorbed by SMZ and SMVT increased while the percentage adsorption decreased with increase in initial phosphate concentration. The adsorption conforms well (R2 >0.99) to Langmuir isotherm. A similar trend was observed for phosphate adsorption by NZ and VT. The Qmax for SMZ and SMVT were 109.89 µg/g and 50.76 µg/g compared to 11.75 µg/g and 8.11 µg/g, respectively for NZ and VT. Overall, modification with a cationic surfactant, namely HDTMA, can enhance the ability of NZ and VT to adsorb phosphate.
