Abstract
The study area is located Southwest of Bintulu Town, bounded by longitude E112°48' to E112°53' and latitude is N2º52’ to N2°57’. The total area of the study is approximately 100km².The focus for this study is on the outcrops found along the Bintulu-Sibu By-Pass Road near Tatau Town. The objective of this study is to identify the structural characteristics of the rocks and to relate it to the deformation direction of the study area. The major rock unit is the Bawang Member of Belaga Formation, consisting of three fades which are thick-bedded sandstone, heterolithic sandstone mudstone and mudstone only. The Tatau Formation however is not well exposed in the study area, and badly weathered. Hence, the focus of the study is on the Bawang Member. The Bawang Member shows several folds and faults and the bedding dipping between 60º to 90º. From the structural analysis using rose diagram, and Stereonets, the deformation direction is orientated Northwest - Southeast. This compression direction can be related to the movement of luconia block which moved southwards colliding with the West Borneo Basement in late Eocene.
