Abstract
In this study, surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ) and volcanic tuff (SMVT) were prepared from natural zeolite (NZ) and volcanic tuff (NVT) using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br). Subsequently, the adsorption of an anionic dye, Acid Blue 74 (AB74) on these adsorbents was studied according to batch method at different contact time and initial dye concentration. Similar experiments were performed on NZ and NVT. The residual dye concentration in solution was determined by UV-vis at λmax=610nm. The results showed that AB74 adsorption was rapid during the first 5 minutes, followed by a slower rate until equilibrium was attained within 90 minutes. SMZ showed higher percent of AB74 adsorption (96%) than SMVT (55%) at 90 minutes. The adsorption of AB74 conformed to pseudo-second order kinetic model with the rate constant (k₂) values for SMZ and SMVT are 5.556 and 2.277 gmg¹min¹t respectively. AB74 adsorption on SMZ, NVT and SMVT fitted well to Freundlich adsorption isotherm, whereas NZ fitted well to Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of SMZ (1666.7 µgg¹) is higher than SMVT (175.4 µgg¹).
