Abstract
The study on the effect of different varieties of dwarf coconut water in enhancing the seed germination capacity of TQR-8 paddy variety was carried out in the laboratory of the School of Sustanaible Agriculture, University of Malaysia Sabah, Sandakan Campus. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of different varieties dwarf coconut water on the TQR-8 paddy seed germination. The study was carried out by presoaking the paddy seeds variety TQR-8 in the distilled water for 24 hours and then followed by second soaking in 25 % (v/v) dwarf coconut waters of different varieties such as Malayan yellow dwarf, Malayan green dwarf, Malayan red dwarf, Matag coconut, Tacunan green dwarf and aromatic dwarf coconut coconut water for two hours to generate early emergence and seed breaking dormancy. After presoaking, the paddy seeds were germinated on a piece of premier towel in the germnation tray. Based on the statistical analysis of One Way ANOVA test in SPSS, rain water was proven to have the similar effects as Malayan green dwarf coconut water in enhancing the germination capacity of paddy seeds variety TQR-8. In this study, Malayan green dwarf coconut water had produced higher mean germination percentage (96.67%), mean plumule percentage (96.67%), mean radicle percentage (96.67%), mean percentage of normal paddy seedlings (95.33%), mean leave percentage (96.67%), mean secondary root percentage (95.33%), mean paddy seedling height (5,43cm) as well as lower mean percentage of dead paddy seeds (0.67%) than rain water (control treatment) to TQR-8 paddy seed germination at 21 DAS. Hence, it was concluded that MGD coconut water treatment had enhanced the germination capacity of paddy seeds variety TQR-8 through increasing the seed vigour as well as maintaining the seed viability. Malayan green dwarf coconut water (25%) is recommended to the farmers as well as producers who want to plant TQR-8 paddy variety. Soaking paddy seeds in MGD coconut water can assist the farmers and producers in increasing the paddy yield through planting of the vigor seedlings that are growing from the viable and vigor seeds. Besides, rain water treatment which showed the comparable effects as Malayan green dwarf coconut water in enhancing the germination capacity of TQR-8 paddy seed variety is also recommended to the farmer for seed soaking practice.
