Abstract

Poly(hydroxamic acid-amidoxime) chelating resin was prepared from poly(methyl acrylate-co-acrylonitrile) grafted sago starch treated by hydroxylamine under alkaline condition. The grafted copolymer was obtained by free-radical initiating process using ceric(IV) ammonium nitrate as an initiator. The prepared resin and grafted copolymer were characterized using FT-IR. The prepared poly(hydroxamic acid-amidoxime) chelating resin was used to recover metal ions (cr³, Ni² and Zn²) from electroplating liquor collected from electroplating plants. Batch method was used in the sorption capacity study of the resin. The sorption capacity of resin was observed at various pH; there were pH 3, pH 4, pH 5 and pH 6, and the sorption capacity of resin was found to be pH-dependent. At optimal pH that is pH 6, the maximum sorption capacity of zinc ion A was 3.2882 mmolg¹. The resin binding affinity towards metal ions is in this order: Zn²> Ni²> Cr³. The colour of resin changed while metal complex was formed. Column experiment was used in the study of metal ions recovery on industry base. A significant metal ions recovery using column with packed resin was observed at lower metal ion concentrations. There were 99.96% of nickel ions A was recovered from a 5 ppm sample solution and 95.67% of zinc ions B was recovered. Higher concentration at 50 ppm has lower percentage of recovery; 78.44% for zinc ion A. Thus, the metal ions sorption was concentration-dependence. The complex resin was regenerated using HCI through column and resin was reused has shown its ability to recover and readsorb metal ions efficiently. Each sample solution was allowed to pass through column for two cycles. Each cycle was observed and found that first cycle has high percentage of metal ions recovery, yet second cycle has very low percentage of metal ions recovery. The percentage of first cycle of zinc ion B recovered was 94.86%, though second cycle, 0.81 % zinc ions B has recovered. Therefore, many cycles are needed to attain a high percentage of recovery.
