Abstract
School of Sustainable Agriculture, Sandakan is a newly constructed campus of Universiti Malaysia Sabah. As it is the only higher learning institution in the east coast of Sabah, it needs Botanical garden for the purpose of teaching and recreation. Hence, in this thesis, a botanic garden of sustainable concept was designed and proposed for the main area in front of the school. Site analysis was first conducted at the selected area to acquire existing information of the site. The information obtained was then translated into a form of drawing known as base map, which was used as the base line information throughout the designing process. Based on the site analysis, suitable plants to the site's ecology were chosen. The plant selection was also evaluated to suit the goals of the botanic garden, which is to expose the future students as well as the visitors of the school to the plant's world. Every component of the garden either the hardscapes or the softscapes, was also evaluated to attain the concept of the garden. Therefore for this botanic garden, the plants selected were of low maintenance, low water requirement, drought tolerant, interesting economic value, sun loving and the materials (hardscapes) selected were having long life span and less energy consumption. In addition, the plants were arranged in the garden based on their phylogenetic relationship, functional characteristics and growth habit, so that they could serve as an excellent educational template. Thematic garden such as butterfly garden and fragrant garden were also proposed for this garden to serve as recreational areas for the students and visitors. In summary, this garden promotes a new concept of University's Botanical garden in Malaysia, in which learning, teaching and recreational experiences are incorporated together in a garden built based on sustainable concept.
