Abstract

The origin of algebra came from both ancient Egyptian and Babylonian civilizations. The comparison of ancient mathematics for both of these civilization with the modern mathematics is absolutely interesting. This aim of this study is to determine the ancient arithmetic and algebra used in the civilizations mentioned above, which later on being compared with the modern ways of solving these problems. Another aim for this study is also to determine how both of the ancient civilizations above use the Pythagorean Theorem. The methods of arithmetic such as ancient Egyptian multiplication and division, finding square roots of a number, unit fractions, sexagesimal system, formation of formulas by the Babylonians are simply fascinating. The results obtained where the way of solving simultaneous problems and Pythagorean problems are very different with the ways we have in the modern mathematics, where each methods has its own advantages and disadvantages.
