Abstract

This research aimed to study the response of ants communities towards temperature, bait size, and nutrient redistribution rates along the gradients of altitude in Kinabalu National Park, Sabah, Malaysia. The study sites including Poring Hot Spring and Mount Kinabalu, Sabah. The method used for the research is the baiting method, and there are 10 samples being placed at elevations of 700m and 1200m a.s.l respectively, with each sample observed in 40-minutes observation. There are 31 morphospecies ants from 21 genera and eight families being recorded and collected at two different elevations. The findings showed that temperature does not give impact to the ant communities for elevation of 700m a.s.l. (F=0.152; d.f. = 1, 8; P=0.707) and elevation of 1200m a.s.l. (F=3.704; d.f. =1, 8; P=0.090). Also, the elevations of 700m a.s.l. (F=1.869; d.f. =1, 16; P=0.190) and 1200m a.s.l. (F=0.129; d.f. =1, 7; P=0.730) did not show positive result for the rate of ants removing baits. However, size-matching between ant size and bait size show positive result as big ants will carry big baits and small ants will carry small baits (F=30.732; d.f..=1, 49; P=0.004). As a conclusion, other than temperature and elevations, there are some other factors affecting the ant-mediated nutrient redistribution rates.
