Abstract
A research invetigation was conducted at the School of Sustainable Agriculture in Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kampus Sandakan, Sabah and the content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in the aqueous and ethanolic extract of Sabah tea leaves (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) were investigated. Samples collection was done at Sabah Tea Plantation, Ranau, Sabah. The samples were air-dried at room temperature (26±3°C) for 48 to 72 hours. The samples were then powdered and stored until further use. Direct method of extraction was used to prepare the aqueous and ethanolic extracts. The content of phenolic compounds was determined using Folin-Ciocalteu method. The results showed that the content of phenolic compounds in aqueous extracts was range from 35.86 to 44.36 mg GAE g-1 dry weight extract. The lowest amount of total phenolic for both extract was found in mature leaf while the highest amount was found in shoot. The antioxidant potential was determined by 1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (OPPH) free radical scavenging assay and the absorbance was measured by spectrophotometer at 517 nm. The results showed similar pattern with the content of phenolic compounds extracted. The highest antioxidant activity was found in shoot while the lowest was found in mature leaf with the range of 14.27% to 31.41 % for aqueous extracts and 42.52% to 55.13% for ethanolic extracts. In both cases, only the maturity levels showed significant effect (p<0.05) while the types of solvent used showed no significant effect (p>0.05). Statistical Analysis for Social Science software (SPSS) version 20.0 was used in this study to assist the statistical analysis of the data obtained in this study. All analyses were performed in triplicate. The data was statistically analysed by two-way ANOVA. A Significance level was set at p<0.05.
