Abstract
Diversity of sea cucumber species in the coastal area of Kudat was studied. Observations were carried out of a period of four months from October, 2000 to January, 2001. Diversity of the relative abundance of sea cucumbers appears to be influenced by a number of factors-physical, chemical, biological and anthropogenic. Hydrodynamic features of the coastal areas are a major factor regulating the sea cucumber distribution. A total of 7 sea cucumber species were encountered including; Holothuria scabra, H. atra, H. nobilis, H. graeffei, H. impatiens, Stichopus herrmanni and S. vastus. Not all of these species were found together at the same time at any of the four samplings. The abundance of individuals vaned from 12 to 104 with Holothuria scabra being the most abundant species. Different species of sea cucumbers have their own habitat preferences. Some of the common habitats include coral reef flat areas, sandy sea bottoms, estuaries and areas where meadows of sea grass can be found. From the present study it is evident that the sea cucumber resources in Kudat are now depleting due to reckless exploitation and over fishing. Some measures have been suggested within this dissertation to preserve sea cucumber resources in Kudat.
