Abstract

In this study, Integrated Aquaculture system was applied. As it a first trial application of Integrated Aquaculture System in open sea using Asian sea bass, this lead to objective of this study which are to determine the possibilities of using Integrated Aquaculture System on survival and growth of Asian sea bass cultured with sea cucumber and seaweed. This study was conducted near University Malaysia Sabah jetty. There were two system which are control consist of Asian sea bass and second system are integrated system which culture Asian sea bass, sea cucumber and seaweed and the duration of this study was 4 weeks. The survival of Asian seabass is same for both systems (98%). While for the weight gain and specific growth rate Asian sea bass shows numerically high in integrated system (55.52 g and 1.26%day-l) and there are no Significance differences between both systems. For sea cucumber the survival rate shows (40%) and show negative weight gain (-0.006%) which means there are no growth for them. Besides that, seaweed shows increasing in total biomass (0.25 g). In this study also water nutrient test were conducted which show ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The level of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are still low which is not harmful to Asian sea bass and sea cucumber «0.5 mg/L, <4.0 mg/L, <200 mg/L). In 4 weeks of experiment Asian sea bass show same growth and survival. At the same time, seaweed can be cultured but not sea cucumber. There are possibilities using this Integrated Aquaculture System in future to culture Asian sea bass with seaweeds. While, sea cucumber are not suitable for open cage culture because absence of substrate. This system still can be used but need to be modified in such a way that the sea cucumbers are provided with substrate. The usage of Integrated Aquaculture System can gain more profit.
