Abstract
The preparation of poly(hydroxamic acid) (PHA) chelating resin was from polymethyl acrylate(PMA) grafted sago starch. The PMA grafted sago starch was obtain by free radical initiation process in which ceric ammonium nitrate was use as initiator. The instrument that has been use to characterize the functional group and the toughness of PHA chelating resin was FTIR and TGA spectroscopy. Other method that use to characterize the functional group of the hydroxamic acid is conducted using qualitative test by observe the colour change of vanadium(V) ion. The chelating behaviour of PHA chelating resin is observed by conducting batch technique. The binding capacities of cooper, iron, nickel and zinc were excellent and the nickel capacity was maximum (0.0164 mmol g⁻¹) at pH 6. The rate of exchange of cooper was very slow that is h'2 < 10 min. It was also observed that the metal ion sorption capacities of resin were pH dependent and its selectivity towards the metal ions used is in the following order: Ne+ > Zn²⁺> Fe³⁺> Cu²⁺.
