Abstract

A field experiment was conducted at Rainshelter BA, Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture in Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kampus Sandakan, from June 2016 until Ogos 2016 to investigate the effect of phosphorus fertilizer (0 kg/ha, 40 kg/ha, 80 kg/ha, 130 kg/ha dan 170 kg/ha) on the growth and yield of sweet corn (Zea mays L. cv. Improved Masmadu). Commercial planting of sweetcorn in Sabah is still limited and it is believed that phosphorus fertilizer can increase the quality of sweet corn. Therefore, this experiment was conducted so that the marketing of sweet corn is better in terms of quality and quantity. The objectives of this study is to study the effect of phosphorus fertilizer on the growth, yield and eating quality of Improved Masmadu sweet corn. The experimental design used was Completely Randomized Design(CRD) using treatments of five different amount of phosphorus fertilizer. Data were analysed using One Way ANOVA and the differences between treatment means were compared by the Duncan method. Soil analysis showed that there was 0.1862 ppm phosphorus content. The result for vegetative growth of sweet corn showed treatment Tl produced the highest plant height which is 198.2 cm. Treatment T4 showed the highest diameter of tree which is 2.12 sm. Both treatment T2 and T4 showed the highest number of leaves which were 12.0. The result for eating quality showed treatment T4 produced the highedt total soluble solid with 16.78 °Brix. Whereas, the result for yield component showed the highest length of cob was produced by treatment T4 at 18. 42 cm. Treatment T4 showed the highest wet weight of cob which was 159.22 g. Therefore, the rate for phosphorus fertilizer suggested for farmers is 130 kg ha-1 because it produced the highest sweetness (16.8 °Brix), the highest length of cob {18.42 sm), the highest wet weight of cob (159.22 g), and the highest number of leaves (12. OJ. The highest diameter of cob was treatment T3 which was 4.56 cm. This study showed there was no significant difference between treatment
