Abstract
The tea plant, Camellia sinensis, is one of the medicinal plants known for their high natural antioxidant properties. In this study, the extract of organic processed tea was used as an active agent in creams. The aim of this study was to develop skin cream formulations containing Camellia sinensis extract, evaluate the stability, antioxidative property and antibacterial property. The skin cream produced was oil-in-water emulsion. The creams were found to be physically stable over a period of 1 month at temperature 3°C, 25°C and 40°C. (it also showed antioxidant potential in scavenging DPPH free radical. When compared to BHT, a synthetic antioxidant, all the creams showed weaker antioxidative potential. The creams had the antibacterial properties against Streptococcus pneumoniae (ATCC BAA 2551R6) under the disc diffusion assay. Nevertheless, there was no inhibition area against Bacillus cereus (B 43/04B), Staphylococcus aureus (S 277), Escherichia coli (E 91/026) and Enterobacter aerogenes (ATCC 1304). Extract of Camellia sinensis is suitable as an active agent in creams. However, further study on the effect of cream towards skin should be carried out.
